Chapter 9

“Wh-What happened?” Although Tabitha’s eyes were still closed, she managed to speak. A few spectators had witnessed the scene, but the waiters had calmed everyone down since the situation was under control and an ambulance had been called.

The woman next to Bianca was a doctor, thankfully. She had medium-length red hair, a curvy figure, and freckles dusting her thin nose. “You had an allergic reaction. Do you know what you ate?”

Tabitha fluttered her eyes open. “Allergic reaction?” She touched her flushed cheek. “That’s right, the almonds. I specifically said no almonds. They must have been at the bottom of the bowl.”

“We called the ambulance. I’m Dr. Hannah Lowe,” Dr. Lowe gestured towards Bianca. “She gave you your shot, so you have her to thank.”

Tabitha gave Bianca a soft smile. “You saved my life. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” Bianca replied. She wouldn’t admit to Tabitha that she had panicked for a second. Their conversation would have to wait, but Bianca still wondered who had been stalking Isabel. She wouldn’t be surprised if it had been her own husband, Miguel—or had it been someone else? If Tabitha had known Isabel, she must have met Miguel.

Bianca sent Melanie a text: Had an emergency inside. Stay in the car. I’ll fill you in later.

Hopefully, Melanie would listen and not burst through the doors with Casper in her hands.

Buzz. Buzz.

What happened? Melanie replied.

Bianca text her back. Tabitha had an allergic reaction. I’ll be out soon.

Bianca faced Dr. Lowe, who helped Tabitha sit up in her booth. The waiter from earlier brought over a full glass of water.

“Here you go,” he said, handing it to Tabitha. “I sincerely apologize, and I’ll get my manager out here.”

“Thank you.” Tabitha sipped the water, her cheeks gradually regaining their natural color. “I’m fine.”

“We’re still going to have you checked out,” Dr. Lowe insisted. “Just to make sure.”

“The ambulance is here,” another waiter announced. He had spiked brown hair but wore the same uniform as the others.

Bianca stood up, tucking her phone into her purse. Another day gone wrong, but at least this time, no one had died.

“I hope you feel better,” Bianca told Tabitha, then shook hands with Dr. Lowe. There was nothing else she could do; the medics were taking over, and the manager emerged from the back room to offer his sincere regrets. With that, Bianca made her way to the front door, passing four EMTs on her way out. Once outside, she spotted the ambulance and a few customers waiting to be seated.

Bianca hurried to her car, tapped on the window, and her sister unlocked the door.

“What happened?”

Bianca filled her sister in on the death scare. “It happened so fast. I didn’t know what was going on at first.”

“Is she going to be okay?” Melanie asked.

“There’s a doctor inside, and I passed by the EMTs,” Bianca replied.

“When I saw the ambulance pull up, I didn’t know what to think.” Melanie paused for a moment. “Well... before that, what did she tell you?”

“She had a thing for Eddie.
